This book was such a pleasure to read. Melissa Chapman did something that many might dream of nowadays, but I think only a few could do. On top of that, she did it in the early 80s - a young woman, riding across the United States, on her horse, with a young dog. (Adding a funny little pack mule along the way.) Think about it - no cell phones, no internet. I mean, even long distance calls from a pay phone were, like. 20 cents a minute unless you called collect.She saw our vast country from a perspective that so few people see - that most people are kind (kinder than we are led to believe these days), that our country and its the temperment of its people are so varied, and so interesting. She describes the beauty of different vistas, the low misty mountains and forests of the east, vast endless cornfields in the heart of the midwest, the astonishing mesas of the southwest... how the sky looks when you are alone in the middle of nowhere. But the think I loved was how bonded she was with Rainy, her amazing horse and the dog Gypsy, who started the trip as a fairly young, gangly pup and grew to a lanky, clever charming dog over the course of their 7 month journey.Do yourself a favor, take a break and read this. It's absolutely lovely and a pleasure to read. A heart felt adventure of crossing America with a dog and a horse and later joined by a mule. The author, Melissa writes with a love for her animals that shines through in her writing. Melissa as a young woman had the grit and determination to see her dream through and as a result her animals were almost magical in their behavior to accept all that they faced on their trip across America. Also the book is a testament to the kindness and generosity that opens up to travelers who dare to stick their necks out and take off on long voyages with their animals. If you've been wanting to take off with your horse and or dog, this book will inspire you. If you just want to go along for a couch ride this book will provide the adventure. Highly recommended.
